February 2009

My Mom, a diabetic with numerous health problems brought on by the disease, acquired one of the most horrific diabetic health complications, a wound.

It started as an infected blister on her heel and grew very quickly to become a large 10cmX10cm, black necrotic wound that was spreading into her body and up the ankle. Amputation was the recommended course of treatment. However, in an effort to save her leg, we tried various dressings and alternative therapies, such as VAC therapy, but had little success.

Fortunately my Mom and I were working with a very dedicated doctor and nurse practitioner that introduced us to a new therapy: Topical Pressurized Oxygen Therapy (TPOT). TSS delivered the TPOT device to the nursing home where my mom lives, provided various training sessions to the nurses, and charted the wound with measurements and pictures. Right from beginning, the TSS representative had a very positive outlook that the TPOT would help the wound.

The TPOT has been applied daily for 90 minutes, by the nurses at the nursing home. It's painless and my Mom usually falls asleep during the treatment. After each treatment a wound dressing is applied and she has the remainder of the day and night free of tubing and machines that other therapies required. Progress was seen within a week of starting the TPOT.

The wound is now approximately 1cm by 1cm, almost fully closed over with new tissue and new skin, with no skin grafting required. This is due to the TPOT therapy, the dedication of the doctors, nurses, and TSS. The service that TSS provides is unprecedented! A TSS representative visits the facility weekly, records measurements and pictures, and charts the progress of the treatment. Apart from the weekly visits that TSS conduct, if there is ever any problem with the TPOT machine or there is a need for another sleeve, a TSS representative is there within 4-5 hours, and my Mom does not miss a treatment. Their dedication is there 7 days a week, including holidays!

We are extremely grateful that the TPOT therapy was funded through the Ministry of Health, through high-intensity needs. My Mom is a testament that TPOT undoubtedly works on diabetics, and my hope is that other people that are facing amputation have the same opportunity.

It has saved her leg.

The number of diabetics is expected to increase dramatically as baby boomers get older. It's well documented that the increase will raise health-care costs and strain hospital resources. The need for quality, affordable wound care will also grow. TPOT can be done in hospitals, nursing homes, and home care. It works, it's safe, and it saves money.
